CDs and DVDs pose even greater problems since each disk contributes 2.2 pounds of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and 100,000 pounds of CDs and DVDs are deposited in US landfills every month. In addition, CDs and DVDs are made from harmful materials such as polycarbonate plastic, petroleum-based lacquer and paints, aluminum and other metals, which release chemicals that contribute to environmental and health problems as well as global warming, both when they are produced and when they are destroyed.
"You hear statistics about how much waste we create and it's pretty frightening. Recycling our media may be a small step, but its clearly one we need to take.
