Fujitsu Simplifies Business Service Delivery with New Platform for the Network Edge : FLASHWAVE® CDS Packet Optical Networking Platform Delivers Con
RICHARDSON, Texas (Business Wire EON) June 10, 2008 -- "With the introduction of the FLASHWAVE CDS system, Fujitsu has solved the aggregation and access challenges that carriers face as they transition their networks to be more packet-focused," said Jim Hintze, senior vice president of marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. "Last year's introduction of the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform brought cost savings and efficiencies to the metro aggregation and transport parts of the network in a platform that combines SONET, connection-oriented Ethernet, and ROADM. Our new FLASHWAVE CDS system brings those same benefits to the access portion of the network."
The FLASHWAVE CDS platform delivers high-density, connection-oriented Ethernet, SONET, and TDM circuit emulation services in a compact, modular platform. It is designed to address a wide range of aggregation and transport applications, including mobile backhaul services, Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) transport, and Ethernet business services. The system's breadth of interface units ensures support for private-line-quality Ethernet transport for business services as well as existing, revenue-bearing SONET-based services. It is ideal for use as enterprise customer premises equipment (CPE) and in multi-tenant/multi-floor office buildings and outside plant cabinets.
"Most carriers are in the midst of a transition to packet/Ethernet services to deliver the increasing bandwidth that their customers demand," said Sterling Perrin, senior analyst at Heavy Reading. "But, these same businesses won't abandon their TDM-based PBX and TDM networking gear until their current investments have been depreciated and certainly not until they have a solid business reason to upgrade. As a result, we expect Ethernet to be a growth driver in terms of new services, but we also expect DS-n and OC-n services to remain viable for many, many years to come."
FLASHWAVE CDS Platform ? Technical Details
The system is a modular two-slot, 2RU (3.5" high) unit that incorporates any number of low-cost, pluggable multi-service interfaces units, including: low-speed packet (100 Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet), high-speed packet (Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet), SONET/OTU1 (OC-3, OC-12, OC-48 and Gigabit Ethernet), and packet/TDM combinations (Gigabit Ethernet and DS1/DS3). This flexibility allows nodes to deliver packet services, SONET/EoS services, or any combination of packet and TDM services.
With over 400,000 Fujitsu network elements deployed across North America, the FLASHWAVE CDS system can connect to a large installed base of Fujitsu optical transport platforms. A typical FLASHWAVE 7500 application would use the SONET/OTU1 interfaces in the FLASHWAVE CDS system to provide OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, and Gigabit Ethernet services from a metro ROADM network to large enterprise customers. In addition, the substantial Ethernet aggregation and transport capabilities of the FLASHWAVE CDS system integrate well with the impressive packet features of the award-winning FLASHWAVE 9500 platform announced last year.
The FLASHWAVE CDS platform will be on display along with other innovative optical and wireless solutions at the upcoming NXTcomm conference and exhibition in Fujitsu booth #SU3104 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
